Why English Matters for NZ Immigration

New Zealand requires most skilled migrants to demonstrate a minimum level of English proficiency before being granted a work or residence visa. This applies to both the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) and the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa.

The purpose is to ensure migrants can communicate effectively in the workplace, integrate into the community, and understand their employment rights. The required level depends on the visa type and your specific occupation.

August 2026 Change — Extended Test Validity

From late August 2026, English language test results will be valid for 5 years (instead of 2 years) for applicants who hold a recognised occupational registration. This is a significant benefit for healthcare professionals, engineers, and other registered practitioners who tested their English years ago as part of their registration process.

Who Is Exempt From the English Requirement?

INZ grants automatic exemptions to people from certain countries and in certain circumstances:

Partners included in a residence application may have different English requirements depending on whether they are the principal applicant or a secondary applicant. Always verify with INZ for your specific situation.

IELTS vs OET — Which Should You Take?

IELTS Academic/General

  • ✅ Universally accepted for all NZ visas
  • ✅ Also accepted for Australian, Canadian, UK immigration
  • ✅ Available in most countries worldwide
  • ✅ Can retake individual modules
  • ⚠️ Not occupation-specific
  • ⚠️ Academic register may feel unfamiliar to non-academics

OET (Healthcare focus)

  • ✅ Designed for healthcare professionals
  • ✅ Uses medical/clinical scenarios — more relevant
  • ✅ Widely accepted by NZ healthcare registration bodies
  • ✅ Accepted for SMC and AEWV
  • ⚠️ Only available in specific healthcare professions
  • ⚠️ Generally not accepted for non-healthcare visas

Recommendation: If you are a nurse, doctor, pharmacist, or allied health professional, OET is typically the better choice as it uses workplace-relevant clinical language. For all other professions, IELTS Academic or General (6.5 overall, no band below 6.0) is the standard.

Tips for Preparing

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need IELTS for the AEWV?

Yes, in most cases. The AEWV requires you to meet English language requirements unless you are from an exempt country or qualify under an exemption. The required level is 'competent' English, which corresponds to IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0.

Can my IELTS from 3 years ago be used?

If your IELTS is more than 2 years old, it is generally not accepted. From August 2026, applicants with recognised occupational registration will have extended validity of 5 years. Check current INZ requirements for your specific situation.

Do I need English if I already speak it natively?

Citizens of the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, and Australia are exempt. Citizens of other countries where English is an official language may still need to provide evidence depending on whether English is genuinely the primary language of instruction and daily life.

Disclaimer: English language requirements may change. Always verify current accepted tests and score thresholds directly with INZ at immigration.govt.nz before sitting any test.
